Many of us reside in small living spaces, move a lot, or just like to rearrange. While big fluffy couches can be incredibly comfy, they can be hard to fit, let alone move. These days it feels like designing furniture that people will use for generations is just as much about being well made as it is about how easy it is to take with you when the time comes. Like at every estate sale where the massive pieces of beautifully built furniture sit forgotten because the style is outdated and it would take three grown adults to move if one even had the space to fit it.
And so the Fold came to be. It folds flat when you don’t want it out or don’t have the space, but then opens up into a chair in seconds. Whether you live in a studio apartment or sprawling house, this piece will not only fit, but fill a space that no other chair can. Maybe it’s the eastern influence , or the unique perspective of being low to the ground, but we’ve always loved sitting on the floor. There’s space for everyone when the floor is an option. And with a chair like this you can sit comfortably for hours.
We simplified the mechanism down to a simple hinge and one length of climbing rope. The adjustable end slides into an angled notch that when engaged acts similar to a belay device and locks the chair in place. You can adjust the angle in seconds but playing around to find what positions you like is part of the fun. The rope, while seemingly unrefined and inherently utilitarian, finds a certain elegance in its simple purposeful function.
